Once-popular fishing spot could make a comeback

HOUMA — A formerly popular fishing spot near Grand Isle that’s sunken into the bay due to coastal erosion is getting a facelift.

Independence Island, which once jutted out of the water north of Grand Isle in Barataria Bay, was a popular fishing destination. But erosion caused the island to sink into the bay to the point that it is no longer a productive fisheries habitat.
