CCA applauds Louisiana senator for effort to avert rig removals

HOUSTON, TX - Coastal Conservation Association is applauding Sen. David Vitter (R-La) for legislation filed today that will prevent rigs and other structures from being summarily removed from the Gulf of Mexico.
In a knee-jerk response to the Gulf oil spill, the U.S. Department of Interior issued a directive in October of 2010 ordering that all non-producing rigs be plugged and any remaining structure removed within five years of the issuance of that directive. Sen. Vitter’s Rigs to Reefs Habitat Protection Act of 2011 seeks to allow those structures to remain in the Gulf as vibrant artificial reefs.

Cypremort Point Pavilion at Quintana Landing dedicated

The dedication of the Cypremort Point Pavilion at Quitana Landing was dedicated in mid-August. The facility was originally the vision of the Sugar CCA Chapter, whose members worked with State Representatives Simone Champagne and Sam Jones, as well as St. Mary and Iberia parish officials, to make it a reality. The pavilion, which is an 80-by-40-foot structure, will provide a place to hold fishing tournaments or host youth events.
"This will be a great addition to our facility here at Quintana, and it is long overdue," said St. Mary Parish President Don Naquin. "We are so thankful to CCA Louisiana for stepping up to the plate."

New warning signs on the Alsea Bay Bridge

Boaters on Alsea Bay now have new signs on the bridge warning them of the danger at the mouth of the bay during outgoing tides. Concerned over the number of close calls and occasional fatalities at the mouth of Alsea Bay, Chuck Pavlik, president of the Central Coast Chapter of CCA Oregon, contacted the Board of Commissioners of the Port of Alsea to seek support for getting warning signs attached to the bridge.

“Now boaters should have a better understanding that the outgoing tides at the entrance are a real hazard. We want boaters to have an enjoyable experience on the water, and they can do that by boating on an incoming tide,” says Port Manager Maggie Rivers.
